Hello 2014!

Happy New Year! The littles and I celebrated the New Year in Oslo with good friends and a torch lit walk. Until they put a torch in Peanut’s hand, I didn’t realize the kids would be carrying the torches, but hey – why not?! We had a great time and now we’re back, back from Oslo, back to school, back to rhythm, and back to work. It’s amazing how much calm and quiet has descended on our family as we move into proper winter. January is also reflecting and planning time, so let me do just that.

The first most important thing that will happen in 2014 is slowing down. I worked like crazy the last three months of 2013 and my body and mind were not happy with the result. So 2014 is going to be the year of taking care of my body. First, that means more sleep. No more regularly staying up until 1am to work. It also means moving more (walks, runs, biking) and staying hydrated. For some reason, I always forget to drink. Just three days of working on drinking more water and the fog is starting to lift. Who knew?!

The crazy plan for 2014 is to stop buying sweets. That means not buying cookies or cakes to bring into our home. We’ll still eat it, but we’re going to make our own. Michael Pollan & Marie Kalman’s Food Rules is the inspiration behind this plan. That and a few awfully pretty cookbooks (especially Leila Lindholm’s) on our shelves. To add another dimension, I’m going to try one type of sweet each month. January is buns. We gobbled up our first batch of cardamom buns last week. Yum.

Finally, there are some EarthApple plans in the works as well. I’d like to get a web shop going, go to some new markets, and develop some new products, and develop this website a bit more. It would be nice to see a couple nice larger bags in my collection and I have some ideas for them already going. Now that I have some inventory on hand and no market dates yet, there’s some breathing space to work on designing. It’s going to be good fun.

So how about you? Any crazy plans for 2014?
